ICChange, in partnership with AFHIA Uganda, addresses oxygen access challenges in Rukungiri District. They are testing the use of the O2 Cube, a solar-powered oxygen device that connects concentrators to fill oxygen cylinders. ICChange supplies cylinders to healthcare facilities, which pay per cylinder which includes clinical training. They operate under a hub-and-spoke model.
While awaiting approval for the use of the innovative device, ICChange implemented an "oxygen kickstart" program, sourcing cylinders from Joint Medical Stores (JMS) for distribution to serve facilities in Rukungiri.
ICChange has demonstrated the effectiveness of solar-powered oxygen delivery systems (SOS) through published research and trials in Uganda, DRC, and Somalia. Notably, the Solar Powered Oxygen trial across 20 Ugandan facilities showed a 49% mortality reduction among children with hypoxemia.
The "oxygen kickstart" program in Rukungiri has provided cylinders to multiple facilities, ensuring reliable oxygen access. Previous studies have proven solar-powered systems cost-effective and scalable, with fewer supply disruptions compared to conventional cylinder models.
Scale and Impact
Since 2010, ICChange’s initiatives have expanded across East Africa. The "oxygen kickstart" program in Rukungiri District has served 7 healthcare facilities, providing life-saving oxygen to hundreds of patients. The Solar powered oxygen distribution system trial in Uganda enrolled over 2,400 patients across 20 facilities. Previously, ICChange’s solar-powered systems have been deployed in conflict and resource-constrained settings, directly benefiting over 300,000 patients globally.
