Mediquip Global Limited provides Oxygen-as-a-Service (O2aaS) to primary healthcare facilities in Kenya, focusing on underserved level 3 and 4 facilities, particularly newborn units (NBUs) and paediatric wards.
The O2aaS product package includes 5L and 10LPM concentrators, 5-way splitters, backup cylinders, pulse oximeters, consumables, and voltage guards. Wraparound services include onsite installation, technical and clinical training, digital certification for healthcare workers, and maintenance support.
Facilities subscribe through a tiered service agreement. Mediquip are testing three tiers with different initial deposit and rates eg. A rate of 1500 kes per hour used/month and an initial deposit of KES 15,000 or KES 180,000 annually, for a package of equipment and on-call technical support that guarantees continuous, cost-effective oxygen availability.
Between April 2023 and September 2024, facilities reduced reliance on costly oxygen cylinders, with concentrators generating up to 3,000L of oxygen for the same price as 52L from cylinders. Equipment downtime averaged 0.25 hours per month, with rapid issue resolution and proactive maintenance ensuring uninterrupted supply. Health workers trained under the programme now have improved oxygen administration skills, which in turn is reducing neonatal mortality rates and patient transfers.
Scale and Impact
Since April 2023, Mediquip’s O2aaS package has been deployed across 25 facilities in four counties: Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, and Kiambu. Phase one covered 12 facilities, training 200 healthcare workers and treating over 350 patients. Phase two, targeting 13 additional facilities, has trained 100 more healthcare workers and is ongoing.. For example, in New Born Units equipped with concentrators, neonatal mortality rates have significantly declined.
