HealthPort’s Breathe Oxygen-as-a-Service (OaaS) solution addresses critical barriers to medical oxygen access in Nigeria, including high costs, poor infrastructure, and staff capabilities. Serving both public and private facilities, HealthPort provides tailored oxygen solutions:
on-site solar-powered oxygen generation for high-volume facilities and a
hub-and-spoke cylinder distribution model for smaller facilities.
Facilities pay a fixed monthly fee or per-cylinder usage without upfront costs. For this, they receive equipment and services such as oxygen piping, backup storage, pulse oximeters, and predictive data management for optimised delivery.
Since January 2023, HealthPort has achieved 100% oxygen availability from 10%, across partner facilities, even during demand surges. By reducing bedside oxygen initiation time from 15 minutes to under one minute, HealthPort has eliminated delays caused by cylinder logistics. The cost per cubic metre of oxygen is USD 1.64, significantly lower than Nigeria’s market average of USD 2.90.
Scale and Impact
Between January 2023 and September 2024, HealthPort’s O2aaS program reached seven Lagos and Ogun State facilities, serving 1,060 patients and training 79 healthcare workers. The monthly oxygen supply has grown from an initial 6,500 litres to 850,000 litres. This expansion has enabled faster treatment initiation and reduced hypoxia-related mortality.
HealthPort’s on-site generation and distribution models ensure reliable oxygen access and improved patient care in neonatal wards and other critical units. Demand for HealthPort’s services continues to grow, with plans to expand into the South-South region in Nigeria and a growing waitlist for facilities in additional regions of Nigeria
History
HealthPort was established in July 2021 to address oxygen device repair and reinstatement in Southwest Nigeria. In 2022, HealthPort expanded to include Oxygen-as-a-Service (OaaS), providing on-site generation, cylinder distribution, and comprehensive support to partner facilities. The team comprises 12 full-time and 2 part-time staff with healthcare, engineering, and operations expertise. The leadership team brings over 30 years of experience in healthcare and business development, supported by advisors from public health, the World Bank, and John Snow Institute. HealthPort’s governance structure includes a management team and strategic advisors driving its mission to improve oxygen access across Nigeria.
Partners and Other Funding
HealthPort collaborates with NGOs, funders, and governments to enhance healthcare access in Nigeria. Key partners include the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which supports PHC upgrades, and the United for Oxygen consortium, advancing Nigeria’s National Oxygen Scale-Up Policy. An MoU with a state government has unlocked services to Public Health Centres, while ongoing collaborations with national and state oxygen desks is strengthening Healthport’s impact. Funders like EV Grant, D-Prize, and MIT Solve have provided critical resources to scale solar-powered oxygen solutions and infrastructure.
