Building a global tech pipeline
Reducing the costs and improving the efficiency of oxygen services through investing in technology
Kemigisa Joan, Midwife, Kagadi Hospital, Uganda
"We are no longer panicky or stressed when the power is off. We've actually just had a baby here for 3 weeks on oxygen.Without that constant oxygen availability given by the LPOS back-up system, we would have lost the baby."
A timeline of achievements to date
Between 2020 & 2026, we invested in the research, development, and commercialisation of hardware & software applications that bring down the costs of operating oxygen services based models.
2021 - 22
Shaped UNICEF’s Oxygen Concentrator Target Product Profile
Fostered collaboration between 100+ experts and industry to co-create UNICEF's Target Product Profile (TPP) and align the sector on what “good” looks like.
2022 - 24
Supported development of the world's first fit-for-purpose oxygen concentrator
De-risked R&D to accelerate the development of concentrators aligned with UNICEF’s TPP and incentivise eligibility for UNICEF’s Advance Purchase Commitment.
2024
Brought visibility to the oxygen concentrator market
The Oxygen Concentrator Directory compares the performance of concentrators in low-resource settings - the result of our independent lab testing study into the performance of 11 popular oxygen concentrators.
2024 - 25
Invested in the Remote Monitoring Unit
Supported FREO2 to develop a Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU). This device tracks oxygen purity, flow, pressure, and power availability leading to more efficient maintenance and lower costs.
2024 - 25
Invested in the Low Pressure Oxygen Storage (LPOS) system
Enabled FREO2 to test the no-electricity-required oxygen backup that kicks in the moment the power goes out. The backup is without batteries, switches, or human intervention, and is now implemented across FREO2's systems.
2025 - 26
Evaluated the real-world performance of the world's first fit-for-purpose concentrator
Karolinska University and Ceradi studied the performance of 88 fit-for-purpose concentrators in 24 health facilities across Malawi.
